A challenge you overcame

Question 1 of 4 · Up to 250 words

Identify a challenge that you have encountered previously; how did it affect you and how did you overcome it?

How to approach it

  • Keep the hard part short. Most of the essay is what you did next.
  • Show the steps you took, with real details.
  • End with what you understand now that you didn’t before.

How hard you worked in school

Question 2 of 4 · Up to 250 words

Did you fully apply yourself academically? If yes, provide specific examples of how. If not, what did you fail to do to reach your full academic potential?

How to approach it

  • Pick one moment and stay there. Readers remember a scene, not a summary.
  • Spend at least a third of the essay on what you thought and how you changed.
  • Read it out loud. If a line doesn’t sound like you, it isn’t done yet.

Challenges ahead and why Jewell

Question 3 of 4 · Up to 250 words

A) What challenges do you anticipate having at Jewell and what is your plan for overcoming challenges or obstacles? B) In what ways does William Jewell align with your goals (academically and/or socially) for your college experience? How do you know?

Answer both parts in one box.

How to approach it

  • Name things you could only find at this college: a class, a professor, a program, a tradition.
  • Tie every detail to something true about you.
  • Swap test: if another college’s name fits your sentence, it’s too general.
