How it decides.

Each read starts with how many applicants a college admits, then places your SAT, or your ACT converted to the SAT scale, against the middle half of its first-year students.

  • Under 15% admittedA reach for everyone, even with perfect scores. These colleges turn away most students who could do the work.
  • 15% to 40% admittedA target when your score is at or above the median, otherwise a reach.
  • 40% to 70% admittedLikely when your score is above the 75th percentile, a target from the 25th up, otherwise a reach.
  • 70% or more admittedLikely when your score is at or above the 25th percentile, otherwise a target.
  • No score, or test blindThe admit rate alone: 70% or more is likely, 40% or more is a target, and the rest are reaches.
  • Your GPAShown for context, not used in the read. Colleges report weighted and unweighted GPAs together, so a cutoff would mislead you.

The same rules run the “Your chances” box on every college page, so the two always agree.

Build a balanced list.

Most students apply to eight to twelve colleges: a few reaches, more targets, and at least two likely colleges they’d be glad to attend. A list with no likely colleges is the one that goes wrong in March.

Check the cost before you fall for a college. The net price is what families pay on average after grants, and it can be lower at a private college than the sticker suggests. Public colleges charge more if you live out of state.

Early decision raises the admit rate at many colleges, but it’s binding. Save it for a clear first choice your family can afford.

Where the numbers come from.

Admit rates, test scores and GPAs come from each college’s own Common Data Set when it publishes one (701 colleges, most from the 2025–26 report), and from the federal IPEDS survey for fall 2023 for the rest. Of the 1,537 colleges, 1,116 report a test score range. Net prices are IPEDS averages after grants.

Questions.

Is it free?

Yes. You don’t need an account or an email, and there’s no daily limit.

Do you save my scores?

No. Your scores, GPA and list stay in your own browser, so they’re there when you come back. Nothing you type is sent to us.

Why doesn’t it give me a percentage?

A percentage would claim more than the numbers can show. Colleges read your whole application: courses, grades, essays, activities and recommendations. What the numbers can show is how selective a college is and where your score sits among its students, and that’s what each read tells you.

Should I send my score to a test-optional college?

A common rule: send it if it’s at or above the college’s median, and think twice if it’s below the 25th percentile. The calculator shows where yours falls at each college on your list.

Does early decision help?

At many colleges, early decision applicants are admitted at a higher rate. Part of that is who applies early, like recruited athletes and students with strong records, so the jump overstates the boost. Early decision is binding: if you’re admitted, you go. Use it only for a clear first choice you can afford.

Why isn’t my college here?

The calculator has every four-year college that reports its admissions to the federal government, about 1,500 in all. Try the college’s full name. Colleges that admit everyone, or don’t report admissions, aren’t included.

How is this different from a mentor?

The calculator reads numbers. A mentor knows you: what you want to study, what your family can pay and where you’d be happy. Clarity Prep members build their list with a mentor and get a check-in every week until every application is in.
