What do you need to raise it?

Enter the GPA you want and how many classes you have left.

GPA now and classes so far come from your classes above unless you type your own. Count a half-year class as 0.5.

Want a mentor to help you bring it up?

A Clarity Prep mentor plans your classes and checks in every week, so your grades get the work they need before it counts.

Weighted and unweighted.

Your GPA is the average of your grade points, with full-year classes counting twice as much as half-year ones. Unweighted GPA uses the scale below for every class. Weighted GPA adds points for harder classes, usually 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, IB and dual enrollment, as long as you pass.

  • A+4.0
  • A4.0
  • A-3.7
  • B+3.3
  • B3.0
  • B-2.7
  • C+2.3
  • C2.0
  • C-1.7
  • D+1.3
  • D1.0
  • D-0.7
  • F0

So a B in an AP class is a 3.0 unweighted and a 4.0 weighted. Some schools count an A+ as 4.3. Schools that grade in percentages usually give whole letters: 90 to 100 is an A, the 80s a B, the 70s a C, the 60s a D and anything lower an F. Some have no D, so anything below 70 is an F.

Working it out by hand

  1. Turn each grade into points with the scale above.
  2. For a weighted GPA, add the bonus for the class level, usually 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, IB and dual enrollment.
  3. Multiply each class’s points by its credits: 1 for a full-year class, 0.5 for a half-year one.
  4. Add up the points, add up the credits, and divide the first by the second.

Georgia HOPE GPA.

Georgia figures its own GPA for the HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships, and it’s often different from the one on your report card. Tick Core on a class in the calculator to count it.

  • Which classesCore classes only: English, math, science, social studies and world language, from 9th through 12th grade.
  • GradesWhole letters with no plus or minus, so an A- is a 4.0 and a B+ is a 3.0.
  • WeightingYour school’s weighting is removed. AP, IB and dual enrollment core classes add 0.5 to a B, C, D or F; an A stays at 4.0. Honors classes get nothing extra.
  • RoundingNone. A 2.99 stays a 2.99.
  • HOPE ScholarshipA 3.0 HOPE GPA, plus four rigor credits such as advanced math or science, a world language, or AP, IB and dual enrollment core classes.
  • Zell Miller ScholarshipA 3.7 HOPE GPA, four full rigor credits, and a 1200 SAT or 25 ACT on a single test date (the ACT number is for students graduating after 2023 and can change yearly). A named valedictorian or salutatorian needs a 3.0 and four rigor credits instead.

What Georgia colleges see.

The GPAs first-year students reported, from each college’s own Common Data Set. Colleges copy these from transcripts, and many high schools send weighted GPAs, which is why the top averages run above 4.0.

How colleges read it.

More colleges call your grades very important than anything else in your application. Of the 134 colleges on our site that publish what they weigh, 119 call GPA very important and 108 say the same about how hard your classes were. Only 35 say that about test scores.

So the classes behind the number matter: strong grades in your school’s harder classes say more than the same grades in easy ones, and a GPA that climbs from 9th to 11th grade reads better than one that slides. Many colleges also recalculate your GPA from core classes only, so a strong elective doesn’t make up for a weak math grade.

Questions.

Is it free, and do you save my grades?

It’s free with no account. Your classes and grades stay in your own browser so they’re there next time, and nothing you type is sent to us.

What’s the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA counts every class the same, so an A is a 4.0 whether the class is regular or AP. Weighted GPA adds points for harder classes, usually 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, IB and dual enrollment, so it can go above 4.0.

What is the Georgia HOPE GPA?

Georgia figures its own GPA for the HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships. It counts only core classes, uses whole letters with no plus or minus, gives no extra weight to honors, and adds 0.5 to a B, C, D or F in an AP, IB or dual enrollment core class. HOPE needs a 3.0 and Zell Miller a 3.7.

My school does it differently. Will this still work?

Open “Change” next to your school’s scale. You can switch to percentage grades, count an A+ as 4.3, drop the D, and set how much honors and AP classes add. If your school rounds an 89.5 up to an A, type 90.

Does 9th grade count in my GPA?

At most schools your cumulative GPA includes 9th grade. Some colleges, like the University of California, recalculate it from 10th and 11th grade only. Georgia’s HOPE GPA counts 9th through 12th grade.

What’s the highest GPA possible?

Unweighted, 4.0, or 4.3 at schools that count an A+ higher. Weighted depends on your school: with AP classes worth an extra 1.0, straight A’s in AP classes make a 5.0. A HOPE GPA tops out at 4.0.

Do colleges use my school’s GPA?

They see it on your transcript, but many colleges recalculate it their own way, often counting only core classes like English, math, science, history and languages. They also look at how hard your classes were and whether your grades went up over time.

What’s a good GPA?

The average high school graduate had a 3.11 GPA in the most recent national transcript study (NAEP, class of 2019). Beyond that, it depends on the college: the table on this page shows what first-year students reported at Georgia colleges, and the chances calculator shows where your GPA sits at any college you add.

How is this different from a mentor?

The calculator does the math. A Clarity Prep mentor helps you pick classes that build your record, keeps you on top of assignments every week, and plans what to do when a grade slips.
