Writing sample (or why Whitworth)
Your writing sample could be something you've already written or you could write something new. If submitting new material, please tell us more about why you wish to attend Whitworth University.
You can send a piece you already wrote instead of a new essay.
How to approach it
- Name things you could only find at this college: a class, a professor, a program, a tradition.
- Tie every detail to something true about you.
- Swap test: if another college’s name fits your sentence, it’s too general.
Optional: a personal reflection
We’d like to learn more about you! This section allows you to share a personal reflection that goes beyond the information that is included in the rest of your application. You might write about an accomplishment/achievement, a lesson learned, a hardship or ways in which your background, identity or interests have influenced you. The sky’s the limit!
How to approach it
- Pick one moment and stay there. Readers remember a scene, not a summary.
- Spend at least a third of the essay on what you thought and how you changed.
- Read it out loud. If a line doesn’t sound like you, it isn’t done yet.
