Checked against uel.ac.uk and the Common App application on October 17, 2026

What you write: One personal statement, 250–800 words (about 1–2 pages).

UK personal statements focus on your course and why you are suited to it, not a personal story like the US college essay. UEL also judges your use of English.

Personal statement for your programme

250–800 words

Please give the following information in support of your application: why you are applying for this particular programme; what you hope to achieve through studying this programme; how you feel your past / current studies / experience support your application; how this programme is relevant to your future career / academic goals; if applying for a programme that requires work experience, how you meet this requirement; and any additional information that you feel is relevant.

How to approach it

  • Start with the moment the interest began.
  • Show what you’ve already done about it: a class, a project, a book, a job.
  • Say where you want to take it, even if you’re not sure yet.
